Each alternative, and where it beats seofields

sanity-plugin-seo

As of Oct 2026: v1.4.6, released 18 Jul 2026, by Bhargav Patel. MIT. Peers: Sanity v3–v5.

The closest alternative and the most downloaded Sanity SEO plugin on npm. Free and AI tiers are live; a Pro tier is announced with no price yet.

Where it wins

  • More weekly downloads (1,628 vs 1,089 for seofields, 6–12 Oct 2026).
  • A single 0–100 SEO score inside the editor, free. seofields only shows its composite score in the paid dashboard and the CLI.
  • Free readability score and GEO checklist in the editor.
  • Visual social preview cards for X, Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp. seofields shows the raw tags, not cards.
  • A demo GIF in the README, so you can see it before installing.
  • Its roadmap includes a team review workflow and CSV import/export, which seofields does not have or plan today.

Watch out for

  • SERP preview, Schema.org JSON-LD, the health dashboard, bulk CSV editing and the team workflow are listed as Pro, coming soon. They are not shipped.
  • The AI provider key is set in a SANITY_STUDIO_ variable, and its README warns the key is bundled into browser code.
  • Frontend guides are copy-paste snippets rather than an exported helper library.
  • Does not declare Sanity Studio v6 in its peer dependencies.

The three differences that matter most

Shipped vs coming soon

JSON-LD, the SERP preview, the dashboard, bulk CSV editing and the team workflow are on sanity-plugin-seo's Pro roadmap with no price yet. In seofields, JSON-LD and the SERP preview are free today and the dashboard is $20 one-time.

Where the AI key lives

sanity-plugin-seo reads the AI key from a SANITY_STUDIO_ variable, which Studio bundles into browser code; its README says so. seofields can call your own server endpoint so the key never reaches the browser.

In-editor scoring

sanity-plugin-seo shows a free 0–100 score on every document. seofields shows field-level guidance in the editor and keeps the composite score in the licensed dashboard and the free CLI.

Switching from sanity-plugin-seo to seofields

1

Install alongside, in a branch

Both plugins add their own object type, so you can register seofields next to sanity-plugin-seo while you migrate.

2

Map the fields

Both store a meta title, description, Open Graph, X Card and robots values. Write a one-off migration that copies each document's values into the seoFields object, then check a few documents in Studio.

3

Swap the frontend helper

Replace your hand-written metadata code with buildSeoMeta (Next.js) or buildSeoHead (other frameworks), then remove the old plugin.

Side-by-side setup

sanity-plugin-seofields
import seofields from 'sanity-plugin-seofields'
import { schemaOrg } from 'sanity-plugin-seofields/schema'

export default defineConfig({
  plugins: [seofields({ seoPreview: true }), schemaOrg()],
})

// In a document schema
defineField({ name: 'seo', type: 'seoFields' })
Rendering in Next.js
import { buildSeoMeta } from 'sanity-plugin-seofields/next'

export async function generateMetadata({ params }) {
  const page = await getPage(params.slug)
  return buildSeoMeta({
    seo: page.seo,
    baseUrl: 'https://example.com',
    path: `/${params.slug}`,
  })
}
